Join us for a fun day of learning how to work in this creative and forgiving medium.  Students are invited to layer their photographs with exciting and simple mixed media techniques to create new work with incredible diversity from your current portfolio.  There will be a presentation demonstrating several key techniques, a discussion of the photo encaustic process with examples from contemporary photo artists, and a look at how abstraction, composition, design and wax can create amazing new pieces with your photographs.  We will also take time to look at your images and make suggestions on how to use them with the encaustic process & what additional collage materials you may want to collect to compliment your images.  There will be a demonstration of the process and time for hands-on to practice the technique.

During our session, there will be plenty of room for lots of creating with opportunity for one-on-one time with two master artists to walk you through the process.   Expect to leave with an inspired imagination, a finished work, & the beginnings of others.  All necessary wax, colors, equipment, & tools will be supplied along with one board to get you started. A comprehensive materials list & handout will be supplied to follow. No previous art experience is necessary. This workshop is for any level of encaustic artist with emphasis on beginners.

Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, uses heated beeswax to which colored pigments have been added.  An ancient medium that pre-dates oil painting, encaustic enjoys new popularity today amongst contemporary artists.   This process allows the artist to work in layers, adding photographs & collage materials into the wax as you build your piece, or you can simply cover a mounted photograph for a unique presentation.  A variety of techniques like marking into the wax and filling the marks with color are used to create varied surfaces that cannot be duplicated with any other medium.

New Jersey Media Center LLC is a provider of Professional Development Certification credit hours for New Jersey teachers and will issue a certificate at the completion of a class, workshop or lecture for qualified applicants upon request.
